Red Frogs

Supporting, serving and safeguarding the next generation.

Red Frogs is an initiative by the International Network of Churches. The ‘Red Frogs Crew’ serves to help young people at colleges and universities. With studies showing an alarming rate of mental health issues and stress levels among varsity students in Malaysia, Red Frogs is there to help intervene.

Red Frogs was founded to:

  • provide a positive peer presence in unhealthy environments where young people gather.
  • educate young people on safe behaviors.
  • promote and provide wholesome activities that engage young people.

About Red Frogs

To reduce suffering and safeguarding a generation of young people, acting as a positive peer presence to empower them to make positive live choices and become a voice of change within their culture.

We’re here to make a positive impact in Malaysia!

We work with student associations to plan programs that will empower and safeguard the next generation. In Malaysia, we have organized pancake parties at college and university residences. We have given out water to students around university campuses, while providing a space for students to connect with us and each other (sometimes, through board games!).

We have also partnered with universities to give talks and workshops, equipping student association committees on leadership skills, personal development and other essential values for life and to reach their fullest potential.

It all began with a bag of red frog-shaped candy!

The “Red Frogs Crew” started in 1997 when youth worker, Andy Gourley, walked into a hotel full of school leavers on the Gold Coast (Queensland, Australia) carrying a bag of Red Frog candies. At the time he was simply dropping in to look after a bunch of skater boys, up to no good. He noticed other school leavers who had been partying earlier, passed out along the arriders and elevators, drunk from alcohol.

He decided to crash some of these parties to keep these students safe. As he found it more difficult to enter some of the parties, the school leavers, one day, noticed that he had a bag of Red Frog candies in his hand and gladly welcomed him in.

Since then, that one bag that was bought randomly at a local corner store has now grown to 10 tonnes of Red Frogs, given out by 1300 volunteers from over 200 churches, serving thousands of school leavers and university students from around the globe.

We launched Red Frogs Malaysia in 2017 with great excitement! We are certain of the positive impact it will make in safeguarding a generation for the benefit of this beautiful nation.

The ever popular volunteers of Red Frogs, always armed with gummy frog-candies, continue to provide vital support for young people not only in Australia but also New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and in parts of the United States. Our primary focus continues to be providing peer support and positive role models to our future leaders, doctors, politicians and decision makers.
